出舱工作的俄罗期空间站资深航天员奥列克.博格丹诺维奇意外受伤。为防止病情恶化或带伤返回地球时死亡，俄航天管理部门紧急选拔胸外科医生进行培训，本片女主角热妮亚.别利亚耶娃（丈夫谢尔盖车祸去世，带着女儿和母亲生活）最终进入了太空。然而开胸后却发现太空中与地球完全不同，无法按照地球上的常规操作进行手术，而热妮亚却拒绝了停止手术的指令，勇于承担起身为医生要救死扶伤的责任，航天部门的主管沃林也坚定地支持她。热妮亚根据她医生男友的建议因地制宜、自制设备，最终与她的医护人员齐心协力取得了这场太空手术的成功。观察期后，她和奥列克顺利返回地球并与亲人们团聚。
